Retired Battalion Chief Brian Turnage
Meet Coach Brian
As a self-proclaimed ‘life-long learner,’ I have enjoyed the process of learning from the best mental performance coaches in the world, and I’m here to pass that knowledge on to you.
Hi, my name is Brian Turnage, and for the past 40 years, baseball has been a notable pillar of my life. I love the sport, from playing at Tuckahoe Little League to lettering all four years as a catcher for Virginia Military Institute to being the Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach at Collegiate School. It has always been a part of who I am. But the sport is not what defines me.
At my core, I am a family man, and up until January of 2023, I was the Battalion Chief of the Richmond Fire Department. I entered the fire service with a passion for serving others, and for 25 years, I have done just that for the Richmond community. It was not until 2018 that I was introduced to mental performance while completing my Master’s in Education with a focus on Coaching Education and Athlete Development at Xavier. Here I realized I had been subconsciously using mental performance skills when responding to emergencies in the fire service for years. Because of these skills, I could focus, put pressure aside, and perform at my best during highly stressful incidents. At this moment, I also realized how much mental performance training could have changed the trajectory of my entire baseball playing career. It’s time to take what I’ve learned and continue my passion for serving others by sharing this knowledge with you.
Athletes today tend to hyper-focus on sports performance and skill, but they neglect the mental side of athleticism. At Mental Edge Athletic Training, I couple my experiences, both positive and negative, from mental performance in the fire service and athletics with the techniques I’ve established through study and coaching to bring an easy-to-understand system to athletes to assist them in maximizing their performance on the field and in life. After our time together, you’ll have the ability to take inevitable failures that will occur in every sport and create positive learning experiences that will build resiliency within yourself.
